Zubair ibn al-Awwam is one of the Ashara Mubashara-that is, ten companions of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) who have been granted Paradise-the most important figure in history. Early Life and Lineage

Zubair ibn al-Awwam was of the noble Quraysh tribe in Mecca. He was being related through his father Al-Awwam, a Prophet’s cousin, and his mother, Safiyyah bint Abdul Muttalib, the Prophet’s aunt. This ties up Zubair with the aristocratic families of Arabia.

Despite the fact that he lost his father when he was very young, Zubair had a childhood that was based on the principles of strength and discipline. His tough and principled mother made him a strong and courageous man.

Zubair’s Early Days and Acceptance of Islam

Zubair became a Muslim at the age of a mere 15. He was one of the earlier converts. The conversion was not done by choice. Quraysh very strongly opposed the new religion. Frequently, they persecuted the converts.

Zubair fought in nearly all the major battles alongside the Prophet. He was the legendary contributor to the battles of Badr, Uhud, and the Trench. In the Battle of Badr, he showed unstaggering bravery by defeating more opponents than their number.

In the Battle of Uhud, Zubair had shown extraordinary loyalty. Indeed, although the Muslims had suffered more casualties, he didn’t move an inch, shielding the Prophet with his life.

Loyalty towards the Prophet (PBUH)

Zubair proved to be highly faithful to the Prophet throughout his life. He was a great warrior and adviser as well, whom the Prophet relied significantly upon for his thought and praises his character .

According to one narration, the Prophet said, ” Every prophet has a disciple, and my disciple is Zubair.” This position well described Zubair’s spirit of devotion toward Islam as well as towards the Prophet.

A Good Husband and Father

Zubair was married to Asma bint Abu Bakr, the daughter of Abu Bakr, the first Caliph. Together, they brought up a family based on faith and piety.

Their son Abdullah ibn Zubair would go on to be an important figure in the Islamic world. This says much for the values that Zubair could impart to his children.

The End of an Era

Zubair met his end in tragic circumstances at a time when the Muslim world was replete with political upheaval.  His spotless career in service to the call of Islam led him to be involved in the conflicts that began immediately after the passing of the Prophet.

He died in battle in the Battle of the Camel, but his legacy as a stalwart defender of Islam and man promised Paradise remains unstained.
