Materials Processing | Material grades for casting

When it comes to heavy engineering components  girth gears, support rollers, mill heads, or grinding tables the strength, durability, and performance of the final product all trace back to one thing: the material grade used to cast or forge it. Choosing the right material isn’t just a technical formality; it’s the difference between a component that performs reliably for years and one that fails prematurely under stress, heat, or corrosion.

Mahavir Concast, a name trusted across cement, mining, power generation, paper, sugar, and chemical industries since 2007, offers a comprehensive range of material grades for both casting and forging ingots. Here’s a closer look at what that range includes and why it matters.

Casting Materials: Built for Heavy-Duty Applications

Mahavir Concast’s casting portfolio covers four major material families, each suited to different operating conditions:

  • Plain Carbon Steel – A versatile, cost-effective choice for components that don’t require exceptional corrosion or heat resistance, available in sizes up to 10 metres in diameter with a maximum liquid metal capacity of 65 MT.
  • Alloy Steel – Engineered for enhanced strength, wear resistance, and toughness, also available up to 10 metres in diameter with the same high liquid metal capacity, making it ideal for demanding structural and rotating components.
  • Stainless Steel – Chosen for its corrosion resistance, this grade suits environments exposed to moisture, chemicals, or extreme temperature variation.
  • S.G. Iron (Spheroidal Graphite Iron) – Known for its ductility and impact resistance, S.G. Iron is a preferred option where flexibility under load is critical.

Each of these material families is backed by internationally recognized grade specifications — including GS 45, GS 52, EN GJS-600-3, ASTM A536-80-60-03, and GX 40 CrSi 128 — ensuring components meet global engineering standards.

Forging Ingots: The Foundation of Precision Components

Beyond casting, Mahavir Concast also produces forging ingots in Plain Carbon Steel, Alloy Steel, and Stainless Steel, each available up to 38 x 44 inches with a 15 MT liquid metal capacity. These ingots serve as the raw base material for forged components that demand tighter grain structure and enhanced mechanical properties compared to as-cast parts.

Grade options here include familiar international standards such as EN-8, EN-9, EN-24, SAE-4140, SAE-4340, and SAE-8620, along with specialized alloy grades like 42 Cr Mo 4 and 34 Cr Ni Mo 6 — giving engineers flexibility to match material properties precisely to application requirements.

Why Material Selection Matters

Industries like cement, mining, and power generation operate under extreme mechanical stress, abrasive wear, and sometimes corrosive environments. A component like a girth gear or a tyre/riding ring isn’t just cast it’s engineered from the ground up, starting with material selection. Getting this step right:

  1. Extends component lifespan, reducing costly downtime and replacements.
  2. Improves safety and reliability in critical rotating equipment.
  3. Optimizes cost-efficiency by matching material strength to actual load and environmental demands, rather than over- or under-specifying.

A Trusted Partner in Material Selection

With ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 certifications and over a decade and a half of experience serving heavy industries, Mahavir Concast doesn’t just supply raw material grades — they bring engineering expertise to help select the right grade for each specific application, backed by rigorous production processes from pattern-making to quality control.

Whether you’re sourcing plain carbon steel for a straightforward structural casting or specialized alloy steel for a high-stress rotating component, understanding the available material grades is the first step toward a dependable, long-lasting engineering solution.

Explore Mahavir Concast’s diverse material grades for casting Plain Carbon Steel, Alloy Steel, Stainless Steel, and S.G. Iron. ISO-certified quality, precise engineering standards, and reliable performance for heavy industries since 2007.
